Rutgers University Camden Center for the Arts:

BE A STAR!: LEAP Theatre Troupe
Take center stage in a LEAP production of a one-act play. You will learn all aspects of play production including acting, writing, and set design, while building skills in reading, writing, organization, and team building, and addressing issues such as bullying. Actor and director Donovan Hagins will make a return appearance at LEAP after directing the 9th grade in LEAP’s production of the Odyssey in 2003

STOMP!: Percussion Playing and Instrument Making
Learn to drum and make recycled “green” instruments in this musical and engaging class with musician Josh Robinson. Everyday objects, including recyclables and other “found objects,” make different sounds. Many percussion instruments can be made from simple materials. So, come join the “Found Effects” band and STOMP it out!!

The Camden Settlement Music School:

Afro Latin Percussion
Students will learn the techniques of hand drumming using congas, bongos and timbales. They will understand the origins and influences of Afro-Latin Music and learn some of the popular rhythms from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Dominican Republic.

Jazz Dance
This class combines elements of jazz, modern, and African dance with the discipline of ballet technique, expressive movement, improvisation and physical coordination.

Vocal Ensemble
This class is an introduction to voice training. Students will develop breath control, note reading, and pronunciation and basic musicianship using folk, classical and Broadway repertoire.

Inter generational Gospel Chorus
Develop proper vocal technique, choral production, basic musicianship and note reading skills through the preparation of spirituals, traditional and contemporary gospel repertoire.

Symphony & Strings
The Symphony Strings Program will promote self-reliance, self-discipline, confidence building, creative and personal growth while building self-esteem in students. Private lessons will focus on fundamental practice habits and technique, building an appreciation for string instruments and the joy of classical music.

New Jersey Academy for Aquatic Sciences

Ocean Science
Participants in this 15 week program will investigate topics about how the ocean environment works. Using experiments, live animals and lots of energy, students will explore questions from “How tidal waves are made” to “Why sharks detect electricity”. In the end, participants will know more about the ocean than Sponge Bob himself!

Tutorial Assistance
This class is for student who are on Academic Probation. Students will be provided with academic support in Math and Literacy. To sign up for this class you must contact Adam Greenman at 856-614-5088 to verify that you are on the list from grades 4th-8th. All other tutoring is available through SES for grades 2nd – 12th by contacting Letitia Logan at 856-614-0400 x 5044.

This session will feature group homework assistance for proficiency and remediation in core subject areas and a Writing Lab with on going assistance for students needing support in completing writing projects.

LEAP Academy University Charter School

Recreational Soccer
This class will provide an opportunity for students of all levels to learn the individual skills and teamwork needed to be a successful soccer player. Developing from small sized, indoor games, the class will culminate with an informal friendly tournament - the teams will be comprised of members of the class, providing an opportunity for the students to play in a competitive environment. The class will emphasize the core values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play.

More than Peanut Butter & Jelly Cooking Class
Students will learn the fundamentals of cooking by learning how to plan a variety of bake goods or meals within a nutritional budget.

Students will enjoy the opportunity to see educational and or youth type movies to have open discussions on content. Field Trips may be scheduled during this time to various local educational attractions.

21st Century Community Learning Center Newsletter
Students will publish a monthly newsletter with Microsoft Publisher. Students will create surveys, conduct interviews, and voice their opinions on various issues. The following features will be included: fashion, teacher and staff interviews, sports, current events, editorials, digital images, appropriate entertainment news, upcoming events, and reviews.

Intramural Volleyball
Learn the fundamental skills of volleyball which are necessary to play the game. This sport will promote good sportsmanship, character education, and fitness. Participants will gain basic knowledge of volleyball while participating in skill drills and games.

Music Concepts/Mini Band
This course is designed to help students to acquire performance skills and musicianship qualities on an instrument, develop singing skills, and develop music understanding through music technology, viewing and studying Broadway shows and developing skills in any of the Music Standards.

Latin American Dance / Salsa
Students will study forms of Latin American Dance and learn the culture and historic underpinnings of their development. Students will develop self-discipline, confidence building, creative and personal growth while building self-esteem.

MIX IT UP! Visual Art Studio
Bring out your inner Picasso! Students will create wall-hanging artworks and sculpture using a variety of mixed media materials, including recyclables. They will also learn various techniques for color, texture, design, and composition.

Sewing Class
Students will learn the basics of sewing such as reading and cutting patterns also the basic parts of the sewing the machine. Students will learn the tools of the sewing trade and be introduced to careers in design.

3-D Arts and Crafts
Participants will learn the artist techniques of color, balance, expression and creative freedom through their personal creations in the form of crafts.

Taming the Adolescent Monster
These series of workshops will help parents understand the transition of their child from elementary to middle school. The seminars will provide positive reinforcement when dealing with out of control behavior. This workshop will reveal strategies and techniques to help your child prioritize, organize and excel.
