College Admissions Requirements

The current requirements for admission to college, as determined by the New Jersey Commission of Higher Education, requires that high school students entering New Jersey State Colleges and Universities must have completed a minimum of 16 units of college preparatory subjects including the following:

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of Mathematics (Algebra I, II & Geometry)
  • 2 years of Laboratory Science (Biology & Chemistry)
  • 2 years of Social Studies
  • 2 years of World Language (Same language both years)
  • 3 additional years of college prep level courses in History, Language, English, Mathematics or Science.

LEAP Academy encourages students to challenge themselves and go above and beyond these minimum requirements.  Students can increase their chances for admission into the college and major of choice by selecting the most challenging academic courses and taking more than the 16-unit requirement.  There are several items college admissions Directors look for in a prospective student:

  • Four-year scholastic record and class rank
  • Comments and recommendations of respected members of the community, i.e. principal, counselors, faculty, clergy, employers, etc.
  • College entrance test scores (SATs, etc.)
  • Evaluation of personal qualities by selected teachers
  • Participation in extracurricular activities

Please see the Rutgers/LEAP Pre College Office for additional out-of-state college requirements and specialized majors (e.g. Engineering, Pre-medical and Pre-law.)
