LEAP National Honor Society and Junior Honor Society

LEAP’s National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are part of a national organization that recognizes the academic scholarship, leadership, and community service of outstanding LEAP students in grades 8-12.

The NHS inducts qualified 10th-12th grade students based on the national criteria of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.  The NJHS inducts 8th and 9th graders based on the same criteria, with the addition of Citizenship

NHS members not only have the benefit of including their NHS affiliation on college applications, they engage in meaningful community and school service projects that promote leadership skills and civic participation, preparing them for the leap to college and beyond.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Each spring, students in grades 8-12 will have the opportunity to apply for membership in the NHS or NJHS.  Students must first meet the academic standards of the NHS/NJHS to be eligible for membership: a minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Once meeting the scholarship criterion, an ideal student should have volunteer experience including school and community service projects, taken on leadership roles in school organizations, have an outstanding record of attendance and behavior, and taken an interest in civic affairs.

HOW TO APPLY
Academically-eligible students will be able to apply in early spring.  All application materials should be delivered to Ms. Sama.  A completed application will include:

  • A completed National Honor Society application form
  • Three (3) written recommendation letters from faculty or community leaders
  • Signed agreement to participate in all NHS chapter service projects and an individual service project

SELECTION OF MEMBERS / INDUCTION CEREMONY
Once all membership applications have been received, the NHS Faculty Council (which is made up of six LEAP teachers) will review and approve/decline applicants.  The Council’s collective decision will decide membership based on the NHS membership criteria (listed above).

Once accepted, new NHS and NJHS members will be sworn-in during a special National Honor Society Induction Ceremony held in April.

NHS MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of the NHS, students are required to participate in all meetings and service projects organized by LEAP and are also responsible to undertake an individual project.

Meetings
The LEAP NHS/NJHS will hold a minimum of six meetings each school year; attendance is required and all members are expected to take an active role in meetings.  (See schedule for list of dates.)

Individual Service Projects
Under supervision by NHS Advisor Elayne Sama, members will propose and perform an individual service project according to their own talents and interests.  Examples include reading to LEAP preschoolers, volunteering at the Dooley House, organizing a fundraiser, or another project of their choice.

  Chapter Service Projects
The NHS will organize six chapter service projects for 2009-10.  These projects will include reading to elementary students, international and local book/clothing/toy drives, letters to U.S. servicemen and servicewomen in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a volunteer project at a local soup kitchen.

All membership obligations will be explicitly stated in the LEAP NHS Chapter Bylaws, which will be presented to each member and distributed to parents through regular written correspondence.
