LEAP Citywide College Fair brings 25 colleges and universities to Camden
November 12, 2009
On November 11th, LEAP Academy’s annual Citywide College Fair gave students from LEAP and other Camden City high schools the opportunity to speak to admissions representatives from 25 national colleges and universities.
LEAP students in grades 7-12 were joined at the fair by juniors and seniors from Camden City public schools, who had the chance to explore potential colleges and academic majors by speaking to college representatives during a two-hour evening session.
The fair was sponsored by the Rutgers/LEAP Office of Pre College Initiatives, a college resource center based at LEAP through a partnership with Rutgers–Camden.
“This event gave Camden City students the opportunity to interact with dozens of colleges that they may never have been able to otherwise,” explained CSUCL Director Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago, who is also the Chairperson for LEAP’s Board of Trustees.
Twenty-five colleges and universities attended, including Rutgers University, Yale University, Temple University, Villanova University, The College of New Jersey, Rowan University, and Howard University.
LEAP senior Steven Phillips, who earlier in the day found out he was admitted to Lincoln University with a full academic scholarship, also took the time to speak to a representative from St. Joseph’s University about possible broadcasting internships at NBC and a Howard University rep about its communications program.
“It’s important to give students this kind of opportunity to meet representatives from so many schools,” said Howard University recruitment officer Karen Ohen. “We’re bringing the university to them and we’re excited to see so many have taken an interest in Howard.”
