Ancestral Remembrance CeremonyNovember 28, 2017
On November 27, 13 of our STEM/STEAM students had the opportunity to attend and participate in the Ancestral Remembrance Ceremony held at the Walt Whitman Center on the campus of Rutgers Camden. Our scholars were able to witness the unveiling of one of the first historical markers in the state, recognizing New Jersey’s (Camden’s in particular) participation in the Trans-Atlantic Human Trade. Not only did they learn that Camden was a stop through the Middle Passage, but they also got to experience many rituals, derived from the continent of Africa, to honor and show respect to ancestors, from Africa and beyond. Students, grades 7-12 participated in the Carnation Tribute to Ancestors, where they each read aloud the names of each country in Africa and placed flowers in a basket as a sign of acknowledgement.
