April 9, 2020
Graduating senior Hakeem Evans was one of four students who were selected to received the prestigious Oriental Lodge No. 1 College Scholarship, given annually to some of Camden city’s brightest and most talented scholars. Hakeem has already garnered an impressive list of college acceptances and scholarships, including offers from Howard University, Delaware State University, and Benedict College. However, he recently finalized his decision to attend the Rutgers University-New Brunswick School of Environmental & Biological Sciences. As a multi-year participant in the LEAP Dual-Enrollment and Early College Program, Hakeem has been able to gain over two dozen early college credits, which have helped to prepare him for the transition from high school into higher education. This opportunity to learn from Rutgers and Rowan professors and compete in a college environment is a cornerstone of the LEAP Early College Program, which provides an opportunity for all LEAP graduating seniors to take on a full load of college coursework. Partnering with institutions like Rutgers University-Camden and Rowan University has helped the Community Leadership Center truly fulfill its goal of creating a pipeline from Cradle-to-College, right here in downtown Camden on the Cooper Street corridor.
