60 LEAP students headed to TD University in Mount Laurel

October 8, 2019

On Friday, October 4 at 11 a.m., 60 LEAP students headed to TD University in Mount Laurel for a session on financial literacy, taught by TD Bank representatives Michael DiPietropolo, Carlie Campbell and Areesha Hydari.

Many college students are not very experienced when it comes to money, having more than likely relied on their parents for financial guidance and support. But for LEAP students – coming from Camden, where 40 percent of families live below the poverty line — financial guidance is even more important.

Lessons on October 4 included:

  • What credit is.
  • Why good credit matters.
  • How to budget.
  • Checking versus savings.

Financial needs vs. wants

The entire day was hosted by TD Bank and sponsored by news personality/former Eagle Vai Sikahema, who funds the Vai Sikahema Foundation. Sikahema grew up in deep poverty himself in Tonga. He can relate to the challenges of going to college as the child from a poor family.
